We’ve got brand new and improved SHOCK MATS in stock! At the same affordable price, these mats now come with a power supply and retain the option to use them with a 9V battery!
That’s great for two reasons – first, we’re able to offer a better product. Second, it means we’re dropping the prices on the old model (which ONLY offers use with a 9V battery) to give a great deal on anyone who knows they’ll just need the remote capabilities of the Shock Mats!
“So, what’s a SHOCK MAT?”
Every trade-show, we get this question about thirty times each day. And of course, we never get tired of explaining it to Halloween enthusiasts and haunt owners alike. Why? Because, we get to watch people shock themselves!
Hitting people with an electric shock may sound kind of cruel…because it is! But as anyone can attest to, the function of a haunted house isn’t to make your crowd feel safe, secure, and full of happy thoughts. We’re all here to inspire terror and some good-natured psychological torment.
Shock Mats are great because they deliver a physical sensation without any interaction between your actors and your guests. They’re also totally harmless, providing a static shock similar to if you shuffled your feet across the carpet and touched a piece of metal. As with any scare, some people are a lot more sensitive to the feeling than others. We have as many huge guys walking up to our booth and shrieking after touching a Shock Mat as we do young ladies who simply shrug their shoulders at it. Luckily, Shock Mats have three different settings (low, medium, high) for you to configure them based on their application.
Now the most recent incarnation of the Shock Mats come with a power supply and the option to use them remotely with a 9v battery – which wasn’t always the case. The previous model (which we’re selling at a great discounted price HERE) only had the option of using a 9v battery. Shock Mats also come in two different sizes, 30″ x 16″ and 48″ by 20″. When we tell people that, we always get a few more questions:
“Can I wire them together?”
“Can I cut them apart into different sections?”
Technically, you could wire them together. But technically, you could also build a helicopter by hand and then eat it, piece by piece. It would take forever and you would probably die, but sure, anything’s possible with the magic of science! So the short answer is “no, don’t try it. But maybe.”
As far as cutting them apart, we have a similar answer to the first question. Of course you can cut them apart! But most likely, they’ll stop working! So, “no, don’t try it.” I’ll explain how they work and then you’ll have a better understanding.
BASICALLY THEM LITTLE MATS GOT A BIG OL’ WIRE AND UH WHEN YOU TOUCH BOTH OF THEM THAT SETS OFF THE SPARK AND STUFF SO IF YOU CUT THE WIRE IT WONT BE CONNECTED AND UHHH YEP, ALRIGHT.
Here’s FrightProps’ fabricator who has a degree in electronic stuff, giving you the real explanation:
Good enough for me! He went on to describe a way in which you could actually cut the mat, but it would disable a large section of it We’ll get into that in the next blog post. But now you understand how the device actually works to emit a shock – your skin essentially completes the circuit between the positive and negative. Also, just to note – they’ll work through fabric, although the effect is diminished. They work best on bare skin.
The last common question we get is related to safety and people with pacemakers. We’re no doctors, but our understanding is that Shock Mats are completely safe for anyone, regardless of any medical devices. But keeping that in mind, are you really expecting a ton of visitors with heart problems to willfully enter into a haunted house or other thrill-attraction?
So there you have it – an explanation as to what Shock Mats are and how they work. Coming up next week, we’ll cover some different creative uses to incorporate them into your haunt.
